Card payments and strong customer authentication

The European Banking Authority (EBA) has issued a statement on different elements used in strong customer authentication in payment services. The statement outlines, for example, strong authentication methods currently in the markets and their relationship with new security requirements.

The FIN-FSA reminds that the strong customer authentication requirements entering into force on 14 September 2019 have significant impacts particularly on card payments in online shops. The FIN-FSA urges all parties concerned, the issuers of payment cards, e-merchants and their payment service providers to take into account the technical changes required by regulation and the views provided on the subject in the EBA opinion. All parties must together ensure that strong customer authentication can be adopted in payments in compliance with the new requirements.
