EBA published guidelines on specification of types of exposures to be associated with high risk

On 17 January 2019, the European Banking Authority (EBA) published new guidelines on specification of types of exposures to be associated with high risk (EBA/GL/2019/01).

The guidelines consist of two sections. The first section aims to clarify the EU Capital Requirements Regulation No 575/2013 definitions of “investments in venture capital firms” and “private equity investments”, which are subject, under Article 128 of the Regulation, to a 150% risk weight in the standardised approach.

The second section specifies the types of exposures other than those mentioned in Article 128 that should be considered as particularly high risk.

The guidelines apply from 1 July 2019.

In accordance with Article 16(3) of the EBA Regulation (1093/2010), competent authorities and financial institutions must make every effort to comply with the guidelines and recommendations issued by the EBA. Financial Supervisory Authority will notify the EBA that it will comply with the new guidelines.
